Hi, I'm Johyeon - or Joy ◡̈
I was born in Seoul, Korea, and from a young age, I was fascinated by how people tell stories and connect through language. This curiosity led me to study in Canada, where being immersed in diverse cultures and perspectives broadened my worldview and deepened my interest in design that values empathy and inclusivity.
I studied at the University of Waterloo starting out as a biomedical science major, but quickly became fascinated by how my engineering peers were building things: designing interfaces, coding apps, and solving real-world problems. That curiosity led me to explore digital design more deeply, and I eventually graduated with a degree in Honours English and a minor in Digital Arts Communication. Along the way, I found myself blending rhetoric and design, and discovered how much I enjoy turning ideas into thoughtful, human-centered experiences.
My experience ranges from visual design to front-end development, including roles as a Digital Designer at Maple Leaf Foods and a Junior Web Developer at Raymond James Ltd. Working in professional settings and on cross-functional teams gave me a well-rounded view of the end-to-end product journey, from idea to implementation. Along the way, I’ve learned how to collaborate closely across disciplines to create solutions that are both meaningful and technically feasible.
Outside of work, I spend a lot of time with my dog, Eve (she joined our family on Christmas Eve!). Music has always been a part of my life as well. I’ve played piano and violin since childhood, and performing in an orchestra was where I felt the most grounded and connected.
Bringing a sense of care and joy to what I do, both in design and in life, is something I value deeply. I’m excited to bring that mindset to a new team and help build something meaningful together.
